Repurpose Old Ties for Unique Silk Dyed Easter Eggs
A few years ago I heard you could repurposed old ties for a technique to make silk dyed Easter Eggs. I was intrigued and hit up hubby’s closet and the thrift store to see if it would really work. I am pleased to say this is a win! Not only for the unique Easter Egg designs you come up with in the end, but for finding another repurposing project too!
What You Will Need to Make Silk Dyed Easter Eggs:
- Eggs (No need to prep them in anyway)
- Vinegar
- Rubber bands
- Old ties (We get ours from the thrift store, but check those closets too. Make sure that they are 100% silk not polyester! A scarf would work too.)
- White cotton fabric (I used a flour sack. You can get them super cheap! In the past I have also cut up an old t-shirt that my son outgrew. Just about anything will work!)
How To Make Silk Dyed Eggs:
Fill a large pot with water and about 2 cups of vinegar. Bring to a boil.
Prepare your ties! You will want to cut down the center of the back of the tie to open it up. Then, remove the inside lining piece.
Your tie should lay flat when you are finished.
Cut a square large enough to wrap the egg. This works best from the bottom, widest part of your tie.
Place your egg on the front of the tie and tightly wrap the egg. Be sure the fabric is lying as flat as possible on the egg for the best transfer.
Secure with a rubber band. (Or if you can’t find your rubber bands like us, you can use a hair tie! 😉 )
Cut a piece of the white flour sack to wrap around the egg and over the tie fabric. Secure with another rubber band.
Drop your eggs into your boiling water and boil for about 20 minutes. (They will hard boil during this process)
Remove from the water and let cool. Then, unwrap!
I just love the vivid colors and how the pattern is all over the egg! These are so chic too! Not your kiddos dipped eggs for sure. 😉
Would you give these a try? Why not, the results are so worth it!
And if you have a few ties you didn’t use… Don’t take them a part. Make one of these. Another crafty WIN- I promise!
