With a rise in milk prices possibly on the horizon, here is a tip to take advantage of a low price now- freeze it! Yes milk can be frozen! Keep your eyes out for Catalina coupon offers for free milk or remember you can also use Extra Care Bucks to buy these staples. So if you use one of these offers or find a good price now- snag a few extra to freeze.
This does depend on if you have a deep freezer with available space. If so, here are a few tips-
HOW TO FREEZE MILK
- Empty out about half a cup from the gallon before freezing (to account for the expansion when the milk freezes)
- When you are ready to use, give yourself a 1-3 day head start, it will take this long to thaw in the refrigerator. Shaking a few times during the thaw process will help the separation too.
- Be sure to write the thaw date on the jug (should be used within a week of thawing).
- You can freeze the milk for up to 3 months.
I would say that it does water down the taste a bit. So maybe consider buying a milk with higher fat content like 2% or even whole- these won’t taste as watered down. But for cereal and recipes- this is a perfect way to save your dairy dollars!
Have you ever frozen your milk? What are your thoughts on the process?

I freeze milk all the time (but when I thaw it out, I add some powdered milk to the mix to bring it back to life – so no one suspects Mommy was messing with the milk! lol!!! ??

I’ve frozen milk a few times. Didn’t realize how long it took to thaw the first time I did so still had to go out and buy more 🙂 No one has commented that it tasted any differently

Definitely not for “oops we ran out of milk”. 😉 And I agree it does taste different for straight drinking. But my kids didn’t really notice on cereal (which is how 90% of our milk is used). Thanks for the comments April

Thanks for the comment Nina! I always love to hear “first hand” experience. We buy 2-3 gallons a week too, so I will def be on the lookout for some good freezing prices!

My mother would freeze milk all the time when I was growing up. We thought it tasted just fine! Going to do this myself since I purchase 3 gallons per shopping trip!
