Disney knows just how to time the release of its new movies. Right now- in time for an early Halloween treat- you can see the anticipated sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning return as Maleficent and her “goddaughter” Aurora. Once again the complex relationship between Maleficent and Aurora is at the center of this story. Add in a “soon-to-be” Mother-in-Law (Queen Ingrith, Prince Phillip’s mother played by Michelle Pfeiffer) and you have the perfect mixture for strong female characters and dramatic relationships.
What I love most about this movie is the re-interpretation of a classic Disney story. We get to see a glimpse of the origin story for the “Evil” fairies called Fey (actually quite misunderstood) and see that the humans and creatures of the Moor aren’t always as they seem.
And as usual for Disney, the artistry in this film is superb! The costumes are exquisite, the special effects are mesmerizing and the soundtrack pulls it all together. Another Disney success for keeping you captive visually.
I often get asked about age ranges after I see movies. As you can imagine, this film has some quite intense scenes, but it is also no doubt that this story is enchanting and fully emersed in fairty tale imagery. I would say around 10 is a good age to fully enjoy the fantasy along with the action.
