By now you may have seen this awesome video that is going viral (especially on Facebook). It’s an “Uptown Funk” Mashup pairing old Hollywood movie dance scenes with the 21st generation song. I LOVE IT! So cool how they were able to get the music and movement to blend so well!
I grew up watching many of these old movies. I absolutely love musicals- and Gene Kelly was my crush (well he and Kirk Cameron of course). Gene, Fred and Frank all had a “swag” that current celebs can only dream of achieving. Watching the YouTube mashup video made me want to go back and rewatch some of those oldies but goodies. So of course I went right to Netflix.
My first search was on Gene Kelly! You can watch 4 of his classics:
- Anchors Aweigh
- On the Town
- Take Me Out to the Ball Game
- The Young Girls of Rochfort
I had completely forgotten about Anchors Aweigh (a must watch for sure) and yes Gene and Frank Sinatra teamed up in quite a few. Speaking of Sinatra…
As for Old Hollywood “musicals”, you can find Frank Sinatra in these movies:
- High Society
- Pal Joey
- On the Town
- Take Me Out to the Ball Game
You can see there are a couple other classic Sinatra movies on Netflix too. When I find a 3 hr window, I’m watching Around the World in 80 Days! 😉
Now for Fred Astaire:
- Daddy Long Legs
It’s a shame that there is only one Astaire movie listed. I think he often gets overlooked since he is not as “suave” as the others, but his dancing is top notch!
Here are a few more classic “show tunes” shows to check out (several of these were in the mashup too)
- White Christmas (Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby)
- Carousel (Shirley Jones- long before the Partridge Family!)
- State Fair
Have you seen any of these classic Old Hollywood Musicals? What are your faves?
